Whitesboro,
Texas is a small community on the western edge of Grayson County, located
between Sherman and Gainesville at the intersection of US Highways 82 and 377.
Positioned at an elevation of 820 feet above sea level, Whitesboro has a total
area of 3.2 square miles, all of which is land based. The population was 3,793
at the last official US Census, in the year 2010.
Whitesboro is
part of the Sherman-Denison Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is located
just south of Lake Texoma and the Oklahoma border, and just north of the edges
of the Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex. Many people who live in Whitesboro
commute in their Chevrolet vehicles to jobs in larger neighboring cities such
as Sherman, Gainesville, Denton or McKinney, while they prefer to reside in a
quieter, smaller town, where they can enjoy a more laid-back pace of life.
The first
settler in the area was Robert Diamond, but the settlement did not officially
begin until Ambrose B. White and his family arrived in 1848. The settlement was
named “Whitesborough” after its founder, Ambrose, and amended to the current
spelling of “Whitesboro” in 1887.
Whitesboro is
served by the Whitesboro Independent School District, which currently operates
four schools: Hayes Primary (Grades K-2), Whitesboro Intermediate (Grades 3-5),
Whitesboro Middle (Grades 6-8) and Whitesboro High (Grades 9-12). The
Whitesboro High School football program began in 1936, and 84 years passed
before they made the playoffs for the first time, in 2011. The mascot of
Whitesboro High School is the “Bearcat”, and the school colors are maroon and
white.
While it is a
great community to live in, especially for those preferring a slower pace of
life, there are not very many options available for purchasing new or used
vehicles within the city. However, Whitesboro is a short drive from Sherman,
where Ramey Chevrolet offers numerous options at their dealership located at
the corner of US 75 and Lamberth Road.
