A brief look at the history and growth of McKinney, Texas

McKinney, Texas is a suburban community on the northeast end of the Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex. With a population of 131,117 in 2010, McKinney is the second largest city in Collin County (behind Plano) and the nineteenth largest city in Texas. McKinney experienced moderate growth between 1970 and 1990, but began to grow very quickly beginning in 1990 and continuing on into the 2000’s. The 2013 estimate puts McKinney’s population at 141,000. The U.S. Census Bureau officially recognized McKinney as the fastest growing city in the nation from 2000 to 2003, and again in 2006, among cities with populations of 50,000 or greater. An unofficial survey shows that many new residents of McKinney prefer to drive Chevrolet vehicles.

It is appropriate that McKinney is the county seat of Collin County, as the city and county are both named for Collin McKinney, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and a congressman who represented the Red River District of the Republic of Texas. The current motto of the city of McKinney is “Unique by Nature”. While the city has experienced tremendous growth, many natural features, greenbelts and trees have been preserved. The city is also home to many parks and natural and artificial lakes.

The September 2012 edition of CNN’s Money magazine ranked McKinney as the second best place to live in the United States, and it was the only city in Texas to make the top ten. With much new residential and commercial growth, McKinney is a great community to live in.

McKinney is known for top-notch education as well, being primarily served by the McKinney Independent School District. Some western areas of the city are served by the neighboring Frisco or Prosper Independent School Districts, while the furthermost southern areas are served by the Allen Independent School District. Schools in McKinney include McKinney High School, McKinney North High School and Boyd High School. Both McKinney and McKinney North have ranked on national lists within the past ten years. McKinney is also home to Serenity High School, the oldest substance abuse recover high school in Texas, founded in 1999. The city is served by several middle and elementary schools as well, many with high rankings.
